Weapon Concept Art

For this assignment I w tasked with creating a original and unique idea for a weapon design. I started my weapon design by sketching out some concepts for the handles. Each one had a unique concept but they all share the same purpose as the handle for my weapon. I put bandages around some of them to give it a unique “hand made” look to it (As if it had just been put together), which suits the era in which the game is set (Victorian times).

I didn’t just draw concepts for the handles, I also worked on different blades for the weapon. As you can see from the concept art below I started by drawing a plain coil for the blade. After that I thought the Cane would work better with a case around it exposing the tip (the sharp end). However I went back to the coiled idea since I thought it was more unique. I was inspired for the coiled idea from the game Dark Souls, since in each bonfire of the game there is a coiled sword with a similar blade to my concept. I finished off the concept for the blade with a somewhat similar concept to the case idea, I mixed both the ideas to give me whats in the bottom left, half of the coiled sword is covered up with a casing (it also has bandages around it, just like the cased blade concept). I also had the idea that the sword would coil around once the bottom of the cane had been slammed on the ground, I got this unique idea from the game Bloodborne, since you can change the forms of weapons in that game by performing an action. (I originally sketched these out roughly with a pencil, but I went over them in pen to make them easier to see on the picture).

Once I had finished with the concepts, I put the finished version of the blade with my favourite handle concept for the cane. I ended up coming out with this. I also gave it a simplistic colouring to show off what it would roughly look like (which is why I used pencil to colour in the metallic bits). I used the final design of my handle, and the final design of my blade, since they both looked the best out of all of them.

After I had drawn the “Finished” version of the weapon, I got some feedback on the drawing from my Teacher, he said that I should apply spikes to the to the bit above the blade (Instead of those cylindrical things) to make it look more threatening. He also gave me the idea to change the tip of the blade and make it have 2 points instead of 1, giving it somewhat of a similar look to a scorpion stinger. In the new version I also changed the colour of the bandages, I gave it a stained colour as if the whiteness has gone away due to all the use it has had from using it in fights etc…

After I had drawn out the sword fully, I decided to draw the blade where the coiled bit has not been activated (The different version of the weapon). I made it looks simplistic because if people saw it they wouldn’t think it could transform into a weapon, which would make it more surprising when it becomes a coiled and boiling hot after being slammed on the ground. A concept I had is that once it had been slammed on the ground the coils would show so fast that the friction would cause the coiled area to heat up insanely fast. (The drawing is not fully proportional).

After sketching out the non lethal version (SAFE) version of the weapon, I decided to fine line it and colour it in like I did with the final version (LETHAL). I took pictures of the non coloured and coloured versions of the non lethal version. (I also didn’t redraw the handle again, because that bit has not been altered in the non lethal version.

I thought it’d also be a good idea to show a rough idea of how big the weapon would be. I did this by drawing a stick man representing the average sized person (5`10-6 FT). Next to the person I drew a quick/rough version of the final design of my weapon by the hand of the person, basically showing the general size pretty clearly.
